Oncology

History

The Oncology Center at Havasu Regional Medical Center was dedicated in March 1997. The facility was built, partly by donations from the community. A large portion of the people involved are displayed on plaques in the lobby of the building.

With a Board Certified Radiation Oncologist, a fully licensed, caring staff, this Radiation Oncology facility has served Lake Havasu City well since its inception.

Present

With computers, simulators, treatment machines, and digital imaging equipment, the Oncology facility is very capable of treating many types of cancer. Our service currently provides healthcare professionals to take care of your Radiation Oncology needs. Another way we serve our patients is the implmentation of a radioactive seed implant program. Previously, all of our patients that had Prostate cancer and needed radioactive seed implants had to go to Phoenix for their care.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy is a very effective way to treat many types of malignant tumors. Radiation Therapy is a special kind of energy carried by waves or a stream of particles. At controlled high levels, radiation can kill cancer cells or keep them from growing and dividing. The equipment used for the delivery of radiation therapy includes both a simulator and a linear accelerator. The simulator is a specialized X-ray system, used to "simulate" the actual treatment and display parameters of the "target" area or areas of the patient's body which are to receive radiation therapy. The linear accelerator uses high-frequency microwaves to accelerate charged particles to a high energy through a tube. Both devices go through rigorous quality assurance to insure appropriate and accurate treatment delivery.

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program
Determination and commitment every day.

Many people believe that once a motor or cognitive skill is lost, it's lost forever. The dedicated, hard-working therapists at HRMC's Inpatient Rehabilitation Program happily devote every day of the week proving those people wrong.

For any plan of rehabilitation to come to full fruition, one of the significant keys to success is to implement a multi-faceted, interdisciplinary course of therapy and to stick with it. Havasu Regional Medical Center and the Inpatient Rehabilitation Program are fully committed to this principle, and have invested in the concept of quality rehabilitative care through expert physical, occupational, and speech therapy practices. Knowing that the path to recovery and independence is accelerated by vigorous, fortifying, and confidence-building sessions of therapy, the staff faithfully sees to it that each patient receives at least three hours of personal therapy every day (Monday thru Friday, with a modified program on weekends), whether it be spent with the physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, or any combination thereof. A gym, activity room, and rehabilitative exercise equipment are also accessed by the patients to help them regain strength, balance, and range of motion. As in all successful therapeutic strategies, the crucial determinant is involvement. An involved patient "one who regularly establishes and meets goals, one who nurtures interests and hobbies, one who actively participates in rehabilitation with his or her team of therapists" far more often than not translates into a patient well on the way to the home environment and to functional independence.

Progress Done One Step At A Time - Physical Therapy
Regaining one's strength and reclaiming one's mobility after a debilitating injury or illness can certainly be a monumental task. In the spacious and comprehensively equipped physical therapy area at HRMC's Inpatient Rehabilitation Program, the process of returning the patient to a functional level of independence is a gradual one, with victories often measured in increments as small as inches or ounces.

Trained to assist, encourage, and instruct the patient on this incremental road to recovery are qualified and caring physical therapists who oversee the myriad activities of this arm of the rehab program. In conjunction with the plan of rehabilitation put forward by the rehabilitation team and patient, the physical therapists work with the individual to exercise the whole body.

Always aiming to restore maximum independence to the individual, the physical therapists develop and administer exercise regimens designed to increase mobility and strength, especially lower body strength. To those patients confined to a wheelchair, the PT professionals conceive exercises that augment upper body strength. In addition, they teach techniques to move about efficiently in a wheelchair, and practice methods of transfer to and from the wheelchair, the bed, commode and the car.

The skilled physical therapists of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Program "backed by years of experience" are extraordinarily adept in pinpointing a patient's unapparent physical weaknesses and determining which precise muscles need to be worked to promote increased mobility. Not every process of rehabilitation is the same: sometimes different strategies are employed on different patients; sometimes different strategies are employed on the same patient. For example, during one physical therapy session, a patient might perform a specific exercise that singles out the muscles of the hip. At the very next session, the same patient might ambulate back and forth between supporting parallel bars in order to exercise the global function of all the muscles involved in the activity of walking. What never changes is the ultimate goal: increased independence through greater mobility.

Comprehensive in size and scope, the rehabilitation program gym has the most effective a devices to get the job done. In addition to a full gymnasium stocked with an assortment of free weights, the unit houses a treadmill, stationary bike, parallel bars, physio balls, steps/stairs, poles, pulleys, and many other various ergonomic aids all frequently put to use to address the wide variety of therapeutic strategies.

An electric wheelchair is also in house for any training purposes. Designed from top to bottom to service the manifold rehabilitative needs of all who pass through the program, the rehabilitation gym, is a place where virtually every patient can benefit.
